Are Political Volunteers Honored or Abused

Most organizations are like a triangle, with the leader on top, and the henchmen on the bottom. Do the political volunteers at the bottom of the triangle feel honored or abused?

I was a volunteer for a governor's campaign in a specific district (covers a few towns in an area). They rented out office space for us and it was more like a warehouse atmosphere and very informal. There were definitely days where we were very busy, but it did have its perks (wine in the fridge, and outings to a yankees baseball game!) You definitely have to be into politics to really enjoy it. The sad part though, is that I just graduated college, and I am doing these type of things to get a decent job in politics (you either need to know someone, or start from the bottom).
